In 2009, James Martin, SJ posted a short item on the "America" magazine website entitled "Recovering the Sacred Heart" in which he noted the important role Jesuits had played in spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart. Fr. Martin noted further that the devotion is currently seen "as "outmoded" by the Catholic world in general." While this may or may not be true, it is certainly the case that devotion to the Sacred Heart is seen as outmoded within a certain portion of the Catholic world in particular, namely that portion of the Catholic world inhabited by Jesuits.
Fr. Martin is in favor of reviving devotion to the Sacred Heart. That's somewhat better than not being in favor of reviving devotion to the Sacred Heart. Still, it's short of what will be required to actually revive the devotion, and it falls dramatically short of the efforts Jesuits have traditionally expended in this connection.
