The Cathedral of Notre Dame's bells sound lousy

Emmanuel, the only pre-Revolution bell, sounds great, and will be spared

The bells were a gift from Napoleon III, cheap replacements for the ones melted down for cannon during the French Revolution, a fate which befell 80% of the church bells in France.  The bells never sounded good, and with age, they have come to sound especially bad, so in 2012 they are slated to be melted down and replaced.  Not everybody is happy.
