William McGurn says Notre Dame is lying, and I expect he's right. It's a sad story, but not a surprising one, since way back in 1967 many foresaw that Notre Dame was lost to the Church. It was in that year when Notre Dame led a group of Catholic universities, including Georgetown, Fordham, and Boston College, in declaring independence from clerical oversight, in favor of the pursuit of academic freedom, cultural relevance, and other chimeras.
