I heard a report on this incident on NPR; they described it as violence between Christians and Muslims. That's rather like describing the crucifixion as violence between Jews and Romans; while technically correct, it overlooks the essence of what's taking place.
UPDATE: Ahdaf Soueif claims the Egyptian army was intentionally misled to believe they were under attack by Coptic protesters, and asks who misled the army, and to what purpose?
